¿Qué
haces si tienes uno de los mejores grupos musicales en el mundo
y no puedes tocar en los EEUU? Bueno, no te queda otro más
que ir a tocar a Japón y dar un show de lo más brillante
en este lado del Pacífico.
Juan
de Marcos ha armado un conjunto musical que iguala a
cualquiera de los "big bands" de los años 50.
El
tema clásico, Tanga, escrito por Bauzá
(Mario Bauzá lo compuso en 1942 y los
Afro Cubans lo grabaron por primera vez en 1945)
abre el show con los miembros del conjunto destacando sus habilidades.
La sección de bronces en particular, compuesto por trompetas,
flautas, trombones y saxofones, deja sonriendo a los grandes allá
en los cielos.
Esta
grabación es una de las últimas del gran Puntillita,
pero es Felix Baloy quien roba el show con su
estilo vocal a medida que inyecta energía al Cada vez
que te veo, y el tema, El son de Baloy. Sus improvisaciones
son limpias, claras y siempre van con el tema de la canción,
lo opuesto que muchos de los soneros de hoy en día que
se alejan del tema.
Pero
no todos en esta grabación son de la vieja escuela. El
conguero, Rolando “El Niño mentira”
Salgado, demuestra porqué le consideran el heredero
de Tata Güines...está que arde! Y
el sonero, Luis Frank Arias está convirtiéndose
en un talento verdadero.
Este
CD es uno que debes añadir a tu colección, pero
el hecho de tener el show entero en un DVD deja a este en la categoría
de uno de los mejores álbums que jamás ha salido
a la venta.

What do you do if you have one of the baddest groups in the world
and you cannot play in the USA? Well, you play in Japan and give
one of the most amazing shows this side of the Pacific.

De Marcos has put together a monster band that rivals
any big band from the 50s.
The
classic “Tanga” of Bauzá
(Mario Bauzá composed the number in 1942
and the Afro Cubans recorded it for the first
time in 1945) opens the show with band members showcasing their
skills. The horn section in particular comprised of trumpets,
flutes, trombones and saxophone push this baby to the big band
sound that must have all the great ones in heaven smiling from
ear to ear.
While
this recording marks one of the last performances of the late
great Puntillita, it is Felix Baloy
who steals the show with his signature vocal style, as he injects
energy into Cada vez que te veo and the amazing El
son de Baloy. His improvisations are clear, clean and always
with the theme of the song, unlike many of today’s soneros
who go out on a limb, way off the subject.
But
not everyone on this recording is from the old school. Conguero
Rolando “El Niño mentira” Salgado
shows why he maybe the heir apparent of Tata Güines:
smoking!
And sonero Luis Frank Arias is developing into
a true talent.
The
music alone on this cd is a must have but by adding the entire
show on a bonus dvd puts this cd into one of the best releases
ever made available.
