ARAMIS
GALINDO - Esto Tiene Cohimbre
Cuba-Chévere Musikproduktionen

One of the most anticipated
releases of the year is finally here and Mr. Galindo
does not disappoint.
Being the singer for various
orchestras (Adalberto Alvarez, José Luis Cortés,
etc.) helped him developed his own unique style. This
CD goes from timba to son to salsa romántica.
His renditions of the timba
sound, unlike his contemporaries, are very aggressive
with tight, yet loose arrangements that will keep your
pulse going until you can't take it anymore and you want
to dance (oh-oh, here I go!).
With all its swinging arrangements,
the CD's selling point is basically Aramis' vocals. Just
like Haila and Mayito's projects, his vocals are over
the top without going overboard. When he sings "Yo
canto a mi manera", he's not kidding. It would
be nice to hear him sing live and see how his soneos
hold up in person.
The only low point for me
with this CD is he attempts to sing salsa romántica/erótica/monga,
whichever term you prefer: "Quiero llenarte"
seems out of place. His vocals are too strong to be singing
to an arrangement so weak, especially the first three
and a half minutes of the song. It seems that it came
straight out of the Eddie Santiago's school of sappiness.
Luckily this doesn't last long.
He makes up for it with songs
like the title track, as well as, "No hay como
el son", which would make any traditionalist
blush. SMOKING!
Overall a good solo effort
from Galindo who, by the way, composed most of the songs.
Cuba has released some awesome CDs this year from the
new generation and this is definitely one of them. Let's
hope he doesn't take long in releasing his next one!
