| One
of the most prolific composers of the past 30 years is back with
what perhaps is the most ambitious release of the year, in any
genre. Releasing the last installment of the trilogy he started
with 1996 release "La rosa de los vientos"
fusing Cuban and Panamanian rhythms; 1999 "Tiempos"
fusing Cuban and Central and South American rhythms and now "Mundo"
with the Cuban clave still there while incorporating rhythms from
Spain, Ireland, Egypt and the Middle East. The result is a very
scary and amazing piece of work.
The
experience begins with "Estampa" and this joint
sets the mood and pace for the CD. As always, Ruben's lyrics are
up front and on this tune he's making reference to the fact that
we are more alike than we think. Puerto Rican Nelson González
introduces this tune with a very subtle Tres solo, that opens
the door to a descarga feeling as Bobby Allende and Marc
Quiñones showcase their skills on percussion instruments.
The trombones are filling the spaces, as a trumpet solo pierces
right through them while the violin is in the background playing
with such ease. AND FOLKS, this is the closest you are going to
get to traditional on this CD.
"Primogenio"
follows with Irish pipes blowing through the wind as what sounds
like an accordeon accompanies it in a matter of a Colombian Cumbia
or Panamanian Pindin rhythms. Ruben speaks of the beginning of
human kind, how Africa gave birth to life and all of us.
Some
songs mix three or four different rhythms, sometimes at the same
time. But he really does it on "Bochinches."
Opening with a Middle Eastern guitar (Citar), as the violins follow,
Mr. Blades transforms himself into a Flamenco singer with accent
and everything. As he tells the story of a family who professes
that in their house even the handicapped person has to work. As
this is happening, you can feel the funk from the bass giving
a steady rhythm and from out of nowhere, a timbal solo enters
playing in the traditional salsa/rumba style, while the rest of
the band is still on the Middle Eastern trip. And to drive home
the point that everything is as one, a piano solo playing a son
enters and leaves as quickly as it came. DAMN!
Did
I mention he does a cover of "Danny boy"? Yes, "Danny
boy" and I've never heard a cover like this, I mean the song
has clave in it. Whew!
Aside
from his regular band, Editus, Ruben got help from Nelson
González, Boca Livre from Brasil, and Eric
Rigler.
While
this Cd is not salsa monga, it's definitely not salsa dura. Salseros
waiting for Ruben to drop another hard hitting salsa release will
feel very alienated by this and they should, radio individuals
will never understand this and they shouldn't, which leaves the
rest of us expanding, listening and opening our minds to something
that will surely become a staple in music history 20 to 30 years
from now, and we should.

Funkadelic said, "Freee your mind and your ass will

Uno
de los compositores más prolíficos en los últimos
30 años está de vuelta con lo que considero el álbum
más ambicioso del año, en cualquier género.
Es el tercero de la trilogía que empezó con "La
rosa de los vientos" en 1996, juntando ritmos cubanos
y panameños; "Tiempos" en 1999,
juntando los ritmos cubanos con los de Centro y Sudamérica;
y ahora "Mundo", aún con la clave
cubana, a medida que incorpora ritmos de España, Irlanda,
Egipto y el medioeste. El resultado es un trabajo fenomenal y
brillante.
La
experiencia empieza con "Estampa" y este número
establece el ambiente y la velocidad del CD. Como siempre, la
letra de Ruben es significante y en este número se hace
referencia al hecho de que somos más parecidos unos a otros
de lo que pensamos. El boricua Nelson González presenta
este tema con un sólo de Tres muy sutil que abre la puerta
a una descarga, mientras Bobby Allende y Marc Quiñones
destacan sus habilidades en la percusión.
Los
trombones llenan los espacios mientras un sólo de trompeta
perfora el oído y en el fondo se escucha un violín
suave. y...OYE! Eso es lo más cercano que van a llegar
a la tradición en este CD.
"Primogenio"
sigue con pipas irlandeses soplando como los vientos mientras
un acordeón acompaña lo que podría ser una
Cumbia colombiana o un Pindin panameño. Ruben habla del
comienzo de los seres humanos, como la Africa dió a luz
a la vida entera y a todos nosotros.
Algunas
canciones mezclan tres o cuatro ritmos diferentes, a veces todos
juntos. Pero se pasa en el tema llamado, "Bochinches".
Abre con un citar (una guitarra del medio este), sigue con los
violines, el Sr. Blades se convierte en cantante de Flamenco con
acento y todo... y cuenta la historia de una familia que, según
ellos, hasta el incapacitado de la familia tiene que trabajar.
Durante todo eso, puedes sentir el "funk" del bajo con
un latido constante y de repente sale un sólo de timbal
tocando en el estilo tradicional de salsa o rumba, mientras lo
demás del conjunto sigue en la onda del medio este. Y para
subrayar el tema de que todos somos uno, entra y sale un sólo
de piano tocando son en un "un-dos-tres". Ñó!
Les
mencioné que además interpreta la canción,
"Danny Boy"? Sí! "Danny Boy"!
Y jamás he escuchado una versión igual. Esta canción
tiene clave! Huepa!
Aparte
de su conjunto regular, Editus, Ruben recibió apoyo
de Nelson González, Boca Livre de Brasil
y Eric Rigler.
Este
CD no es Salsa Monga, pero tampoco es Salsa Dura. Los salseros
que estén esperando que Rubén vuelva con otro CD
de Salsa Dura se sentirán muy aislados con este, y deberán
sentirse así. Los individuales de la radio jamás
lo entenderán, y no deberán entenderlo.... lo que
nos deja a nosotros, expandiendo, escuchando y abriendo nuestras
mentes para recibir y aceptar algo que seguramente se convertirá
en música clásica 20 a 30 años en el futuro....
y es lo que deberemos de hacer!

culo seguirá."
