When you hear the name Generoso Jiménez, you automatically
think of Beny Moré. And that's because Mr.
Jiménez played such an important role in Moré's band as a trombonist
and arranger. Well "Generoso, Generoso", is back with an outstanding
CD.
Reviving the style of arranging he did with Moré's
band, Jiménez takes songs composed by him (mainly instrumentals)
and showcases them with an all-star cast of "Who's who" in
Cuban music. Superstars like Juan Pablo Torres, Pío
Leyva, his daughter, Regina Jiménez, Paquito
d' Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Rudy
Calzado, Guillermo Rubalcaba and Manolito
Sibonet make this a must-have.
Rudy Calzado vocals are featured on "Vengo con
sed" and "Lágrimas de licor" giving them that sonero montuno
style in a big band setting.
But while the vocals are nice, the highlights
of this project are the descargas when the band lets loose. On "Dame
un chance" the brass section feels like they are going to "Tear
the roof off the sucker." (as Parliament would say). And on "Eso
es un trombón" the trio of Torres, Pedro
Alexander on piano and Frank Rubio on bass
are as tight as a 16 wheeler's brake.
The only drawback is that I wish the CD was longer. Luckily, we can put the CD on
repeat! Get this bad boy!
