Ex
corista for the late great Benny Moré
and one of the stars of Buena Vista Social Club
is back with his second solo release and with perhaps more interesting
results that his previous one.
Rumors around the music world are that this was perhaps Ry
Cooder's last chance to record in Cuba, due to the USA
government or Cuba's government, depending on who you believe.
This also may explain why there are fewer musicians on these sessions
than on his previous one and might explain why most of the tunes
are written by Ferrer himself, since they had
to be done on the spot and we are better off for it.
Boquiñeñe
sounds like a typical straightforward son, as Ibrahim
uses the track to introduce the players who are involved throughout
the entire recording. While his voice is not as strong as before,
perhaps because of age or no studio manipulation as before, but
his voice does sound more natural and more relaxed. Seems that
Ry Cooder used whatever instruments were lying
around the studio, as you hear a funky organ during the title
track and an accordion during Como el arullo de palma
that gives it like a bolero-son-ranchera type of thing happening.
Starting
from track 5 through number 8, you have a mini bolero suite. Ferrer's
deliveries are to die for. This man can sing a bolero. From Naufragio
through Perfumes de Gardenia you'll be transfixed on
his vocals prowess.
But
the two songs that will make your jaw drop are Música
Cubana co written with Chucho Valdes who
also plays a mean subtle piano solo on this one, while Ibrahim
name calls who's who in Cuban music past and present, dead and
alive. And then there's Hay que entrarle a palos a ese,
written by Ibrahim Ferrer but very similar to
the arrangements they did for Marieta from his last cd
written by Faustino Oramos. The song swings and
with Manuel Galban's organ solo gives this song
an extra push.
If
this is in fact Ry Cooder's last Cuban production,
it was a great ride. Let's just hope it's not Ibrahim
Ferrer's last recording because this man still has more
fire and delivery than many of the young bucks out there. |
El

está de vuelta con su segundo CD, lo cual es aún
más interesante que el anterior.
Los
rumores en el mundo musical dicen que tal vez ésta fue
la última oportunidad de Ry Cooder para
grabar en Cuba, debido al gobierno estadounidense, o al gobierno
cubano, según a quién crees. Eso puede explicar
porqué hay menos músicos en esta grabación
que en la anterior y porqué las canciones son, en su mayoría,
escritas por Ferrer mismo, como tenían
que crearse en el momento... y nosotros somos los beneficiarios
de eso.
Boquiñeñe
suena
como un son típico, e Ibrahim utiliza
este tema para presentarnos a los músicos involucrados
en la grabación. Su voz no tiene la fuerza de antes, tal
vez por la edad o por no haber sido manipulada en el estudio como
antes, pero suena más natural y más relajada. Da
la impresión que Ry Cooder utilizó
cualquier instrumento que encontró al azar en el estudio,
porque se escucha un órgano "funky" durante el
tema titular y un acordión durante el tema llamado, Como
el arullo de palma que le da un saborcito de bolero-son-ranchera.
Comenzando
con el tema número 5 y hasta el número 8, tienes
un mini-suite de boleros. Las interpretaciones de Ferrer
son la muerte! Este hombre sí puede cantar un bolero. Desde
Naufragio hasta Perfumes de gardenia, te quedarás
impactado con su proesa.
Pero
las dos canciones que te dejarán boca abierta son Música
cubana, con Chucho Valdes de co-autor y
quien también toca un sólo de piano en este tema,
mientras Ibrahim canta una lista de quién
es quién de la música cubana, de antaño y
hoy, fallecido y vivo, y también en el tema Hay que
entrarle a palos a ese, escrito por Ibrahim Ferrer
pero muy parecido al arreglo que hizo en Marieta en el
último CD escrito por Faustino Oramos.
La canción tiene swing y le da un empuje extra el sólo
de órgano de Manuel Galban.
Si
bien es cierto que es la última producción cubana
de Ry Cooder, fue fantástica. Esperamos
que no sea la última grabación de Ibrahim
Ferrer, porque este hombre maduro aún tiene más
fuego y la capacidad de entregarlo que muchos de los más
jóvenes hoy en día. |
