Las
Sesiones Neoyorquinas
Después
de un show explosivo en Carnegie Hall
en Nueva York en el año 1998, los
miembros del Club Social Buena Vista se
juntaron con Juan Pablo Torres, Alfredo
Valdés, Jr. y otros para una
de dos grabaciones explosivas.
El
recién fallecido "Puntillita"
(Q.E.P.D.) abre con "El golpe
bibijagua" y sonando tan bien
como siempre. Esta canción tiene
el sonido del son/conjunto con Alfredo
Valdés, Jr. y el guajiro Mirabal
tomando sólos de trompeta y piano,
respectivamente. Muy buena manera de comenzar
la fiesta!
El
tema, "Quiero un sombrero"
tiene una sensación de rumba/plena,
guiado por Ibrahim Ferrer y
Pío Leyva. Esta canción
abarca el enfoque del proyecto entero:
divertiéndose! Tomando turnos con
el micrófono, ambos soneros tiran
"veneno amigable". Es fantástico
escuchar dos soneros que tienen sus añitos
y tienen tanto swing como los mejores
hoy en día. Merecen muchos "kudos".
Otra
canción que se destaca es "La
timba gorda". Aunque la canción
tiene elementos de timba, es más
agresiva que ese género musical.
De nuevo, Ibrahim, Pío y
Puntillita destacan sus talentos
vocales con swing, swing y más
swing.
Sorprende,
pero este CD es bastante bailable y agresivo.
Tal vez porque se grabó en Nueva
York o tal vez porque fue después
de un concierto y ya corrían las
emociones... sea lo que sea la razón,
este CD está que arde!
¿Será
tan buena la segunda parte desde La Habana?

The
New York Sessions
After
an explosive set at New York's Carnegie
Hall in 1998, members of the Buena Vista
Social Club joined Juan Pablo Torres,
Alfredo Valdés, Jr. and others
for one of two explosive recordings.
The
late great "Puntillita"
(R.I.P.) opens with "El golpe
bibijagua" sounding as good as
he ever did. This song has that son/conjunto
sound with Alfredo Valdés, Jr.
and Guajiro Mirabal taking piano
and trumpet solos respectively. Nice way
to start this party.
"Quiero
un sombrero" has a rumba/plena
feel to it, led by Ibrahim Ferrer and
Pío Leyva. This song encompasses
what this project is all about, a good
time. Taking turns on the mic, the two
soneros spew friendly inventive venom.
Man, it's great to hear soneros that are
up there in years and can still swing
with the best of them. Many kudos to them.
Another
highlight is "La timba gorda."
While the song has timba elements, it
is more aggressive than that genre musical
format. Again, Ibrahim, Pío
and Puntillita showcase their
vocal talents by swinging, swinging and
more swinging.
This,
surprisingly enough, is a very danceable
and aggressive CD. Perhaps it's the fact
that it was taped in New York or maybe
because it was right after a concert gig
they had they were already high on emotions?
Whatever the reason, this CD is a smoker.
I wonder if part two from Havana will
be as good?
