Quinto Mayor (Codiscos)

Whenever you hear the name
Quinto Mayor the
first thing you should think is, "Salsa Gorda".
The next thing you should do is go and buy it.
The Colombian band directed
by the Galé brothers is back with an even
tighter release. Just like Soneros del Barrio
from NY, this band covers old-school 70's salsa with
even more swing.
"Agua de clavelito"
is an old Cuban song that was interpreted in the late
70's by Johnny Pacheco. Casanova and Mayor deliver
this song note for note.
Next they slow things down
with a son from Cuco Valoy "Mendigo de
amor". This song demostrates those Colombian
multi tracked chorus vocals happening in the background.
SWEET! This song leads into the Palmieri / Feliciano
cut "Palo de mango" from their
Champagne album. While no one has vocal delivery like
Cheo Feliciano, Quinto does a good job keeping
that swing flavor.
The only issue that I have
with this release is that some of the songs are too short
or they don't improvise much. Other than that, this CD
will ignite any party!
