If you
don't know who Vocal Sampling is, you are one of the few! This
is a group of young, highly talented musicians who make all the sounds
of an orchestra with nothing more than their mouths! The Director, René
Baños Pascual, is also the Author and Composer of most of the
tracks.
The
first track, Un son pa' cantar, says, "Ten
la certeza de que todo empieza en tu imaginación"
(You can be sure that everything begins with your imagination)
and what an imagination he has! The arrangements are
very intricate and have elements of Jazz, classical music,
rap and of course, everything Afro-Cuban. This song combats
negativism by bathing us in positivism and rhythms, poetry
and sentiment.
I
was very surprised by the third track on this CD, Ay!
Venezuela - a joropo - and I would like to dedicate
it to all of my Venezuelan friends! It reminds me of
those evenings at my house, surrounded by 'chamos' and
'chamas' playing thel cuatro, guitar and singing....of
course Vocal Sampling is a bit more in tune than we were,
especially after a few Venezuelan rum drinks that accompanied
our singing!
El
cuarto de Tula is a very well known song, a traditional
song, but this interpretation of it is on fire!
"El
cuarto de Tula que cogió candela.
Se quedó dormida y no apagó la vela."
(Tula's room caught fire
She fell asleep and forgot to put out the candle.)
In
between verses, they improvise choruses and there is
an awesome piano solo... what tumba'o!
And
if you want "Filin", you have Escaramujo,
a beautiful song by Silvio Rodríguez which is
really more of a poem put to music. The harmonies slide
down your ear and reach through your heart, touching
your soul.
This
CD is really worth the money! Buy it!
