Salsa
and Merengue Wednesday nights when the
whole club is Latin, but Thursdays through Saturdays Latin music in the Babalú Room. Comments: (1/12/2006
by Jorge) I am a regular of this club on Wednesday nights. You will
find many Casino Style dancers, although you will not see any Ruedas
forming. In terms of the music, they play about 30% Salsa up to midnight
with the rest being Merengue, Bachata, Reggaeton and a Cumbia here and
there. After midnight, the ratio drops to about 20% Salsa, and they
start playing more and more Reggaeton. The club itself is large, but
the dance floor is a bit small for my taste. The dance floor is usually
jam packed by 11:30 p.m., so expect a little shoving and pushing (pretty
normal in any club anyway). You will usually find the good dancers next
to the DJ booth.
As of the date of this review, the cover to go into the club is $10.
Ladies get a plastic cup for free drinks all night (Sorry guys!). Overall,
Iguana Cafe Pembroke Pines is the best alternative on Wednesday nights
in Broward County. Final

Latin nights Thursdays (8:00 p.m. - 2:00
a.m.) Comments (1/2008 by Jacira): I was
very disappointed with this place. They claim to have a live band,
but honestly, it was a couple of musicians (keyboard, percussion,
vocalist) with canned music in the background. Sounded like salsa-karaoke
to me. There is a very small dance floor, but the place was packed
with 50's, 60's and older men, and lots of 20 and 30's gold-digger
type women. There were only a few couples who actually knew how to dance
salsa - sort of. Not recommended at all.
On Thursdays L.A. Salsa Dance Studio gives free salsa lessons from
11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Final grade: D-

Comments (3/4/2006 by Jorge): I had been hearing
much about Coco Locos Club reopening after about 1 - 2 years of closing.
On Fridays, 100% Salsa from 9:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m. No cover (on Fridays)
until 11:00 p.m. I went on a Friday night and was pleasantly surprised
with the club. It has a spacious wooden dance floor. In terms of Salsa
dancers, I got to see all levels. Most of them danced On1 with about
half of them dancing Casino (I even saw a small Rueda forming). However,
I believe you're better off going with your own partner or group of
friends. Coco Locos is a fun club, playing about 25% - 35% Salsa,
with the rest being Merengue, Bachata and Reggaeton. Overall rating: B+.
Conga's

Sq. Plaza)

With an excellent wooden floor, this is a good place to check out,
but you need to go in groups or with a Salsa dance partner. Otherwise,
you'll have a hard time finding someone to dance with. Behind Shell's
Restaurant, on the northwest corner of University and Sunrise.
Abierto Jueves a Sábado - open Thursday through Saturday.
For Salsa dancing, Saturday is the best day.
$10 after 11 p.m., Free before 11. Comments
(3/4/2006 by Jorge): Conga's has been promoting a Salsa night every
Thursday , so I decided to visit. Most of the people were On2 dancers
that night because there is a Salsa class prior to the Social dancing
itself. Just as the description for the club says, I would recommend
that you go with your own partner or group. The dance floor is excellent.
In terms of a crowd, don't expect it. I was able to count probably
40 people there. Overall, on Thursday nights, if you want to be able
to practice with your own partner (or group of friends) in a club
setting, Conga's is a good choice... Overall rating: B.

cake and all the coffee and iced tea you can drink. No bar, so B.Y.O.B.
Smoke
Free Environment! (The only
one in South Florida). Club Review: (Review: 1/12/2006 by Jorge) Goldcoast
Ballroom is by far the best option for Salsa dancing on Sunday nights
in Broward County. I don't miss a single Sunday. It is 3 solid hours
of salsa (with an occasional Merengue & Cha-Cha-Chá).
You night ask: "Only 3 hours?", but believe me, after
dancing for 3 straight hours, your feet are begging for mercy. The
crowd is mixed, in terms of age and style of dancing. You will find
the all time great New York Palladium mambo dancers hanging out
stage left, and the younger crowd tending to gather next to the
kitchen.
The best part of this place is the gorgeous, huge wooden parquet
dance floor. There is a good sized stage at the end of the room
where live bands play from time to time. The place is beautifully
decorated and gives the feel of a nice country club, complete with
gift shop, except this one sells professional dance shoes ordered
to your size and salsa clothing, accessories and makeup. If you
get thirsty, you'll have to settle for ice water, which is graciously
provided for you on each table in a pitcher with cups. If you don't
like water, the price of admission includes sandwiches, cake, coffee
and iced tea. There is no alcohol served and (Thank you Jeff and
Vinny) No cigarettes!
Hurray!

Review:
(Review 7/22/2007 by Jorge) Island Jacks is a very cozy neighborhood
restaurant in the Margate area which some of the best South Florida
Salseros have made their home on Thursday nights. They just installed
a new wooden dance floor (Great!). I know the DJ personally. DJ
PR Pete is a passionate Salsa music collector, so you get to listen
to some of the best Salsa, Timba, Mambo and Cha-Cha (with a few
Merengues and Bachatas). The wide screens playing Salsa clips all
night are a nice addition to the ambiance. You can watch some of
the best Salsa dancers in the world while resting your feet. There
is no cover, drinks are reasonably priced, and the kitchen is open
until midnight. But just as I started this review, the thing that
makes Island Jacks different is the "everyone knows you"
atmosphere of the place. The bartenders and waiters/waitresses are
friendly and attentive. Overall, I give Island Jacks an A+ for music
selection, atmosphere, dance floor and quality of dancers attending.
