Following the tragic events in London on 7 July 2005, the people
of London have pulled together and shown their commitment in continuing
with their normal lives and their determination not to be intimidated
by outside forces. In a city as diverse as London, with many nationalities
living here and over 300 languages spoken on the streets of London,
the events on 7/7 affected every single one of us. Salsa is one
way of mixing with people from all walks of life where your background
means nothing and the one thing you have in common is your love
of salsa music and dance.
There is a huge salsa scene in London with clubs and classes taking
place virtually every day of the week. The Cuban scene is alive
and well, but still very much in a minority against the NY and
LA styles. However, the Cuban scene is growing rapidly and with
an expanding interest in Rueda,
any dedicated Cuban event is incredibly popular.
I've listed below clubs and classes that I know of, but would
recommend you either call or e-mail these clubs beforehand to
confirm the times and costs of the classes. I've also listed the
nearest underground station, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), or
train station where there is no nearby tube*. Please check the
website or call the venue as some destinations may be a long walk
from the nearest tube and it might be easier to catch the bus.
Enjoy your salsa in London!
Angela
(*Translator's note: "Tube" = Metro, subway, or
underground rail transportation!)

El
Barco Latino
Temple Pier, Victoria Embankment, London WC2
Tube: Temple/Embankment (District/Circle/Bakerloo lines)
Tel: 020 7379 5496
El Barco Latino, as implied by it's name, is a boat on the
river. Primarily a floating Colombian restaurant, it's open
7 days a week. Salsa is taught here on Wednesday evenings although I haven't tried the classes. The tapas menu
in the restaurant is good value and the staff, very friendly.
However, heavy duty salsa doesn't really happen, it's more
a hang out for people meeting or dancing (not necessarily
salsa) into the early hours of the morning. It is a lively
venue, after 10.00 p.m. once the club starts and has a friendly
atmosphere.

Train/DLR: Lewisham
Tel: 020 8690 4036 www.salsavida.co.uk
Located on the 2nd floor opposite the Clock
Tower in Lewisham High Street, this club has become popular
with the locals. It has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, although
the standard of dancing is probably best described as Intermediate.
There are occasionally advanced dancers, but it's unpredicatable.
There is an excellent wooden dance floor area and bar.
Classes are held between 7.30 - 9.30 p.m.
with the club until 11.30 p.m. Club and class is £7.00,
and entrance to the club only is £3.00.
Known
locally as Bar Salsa, Salsa is very much a bar and restaurant,
with tables being removed for dancing. This usually means
it gets very hot and crowded (minimal air conditioning so
may be too hot during the summer months) and people dance
wherever they can find space. Monday nights feature salsa and caters very much for
the NY scene. Latin music is on every night
with Tuesday nights specialising
in Brazilian music for the large Brazilian
community in London. Wednesday nights have just been taken over by Latin 8 Productions and
seems to be welcoming back many dancers who deserted the original
Bar Salsa. The rest of week has salsa and more commercial
Latin pop music, but beware office parties taking over the
dance floor in a drunken haze, and guys using the place as
a pick up joint.
