Issac
Delgado - Live in Prospect Park
Brooklyn, NY, July 5, 2007
Fans and
curious spectators waited in the pouring rain to hear the man from Cuba.
Around 9:15 p.m., Issac and his band (all dressed in black) hit the
stage to a medley of his earlier hits (Necesito una amiga/No me
mires a los ojos/La Fórmula) and the crowd with rain and
all were in heaven. Next, he went into "Catalina"
where his son (Jr.) did a not-so-convincing solo, followed by other
keyboardist Milton who did a better job, but nothing spectacular.
"Sandunguita"
- a staple in Issac’s live shows, was next with a more salsa style
arrangement. "Dime cuál es" from his "Prohibido"
2005 recording was next, and this was one of the highlights from the
show. It was a smoker, folks were dancing all over the park and the
band seemed at home with this one, while Issac was in top vocal form
with his tone and improvisation skills. Funny thing was that he played
3 tracks from this recording, but none from his new one, "Primera
plana".
An uninspired
performance of "El macao" from "Prohibido"
followed and this gave way to "El pregón de chocolate",
which unfortunately really showed the band's lack of timba tumbao. For
starters, something that sets timba bands apart is the drum kit and
that was missing from this set. The pianos were not strong or loud enough
which made the song sound flat.
The show
ended with the opening of "Los sitios entero" which
gave way to "Si te gusta mi compas". NY musician
Bobby Allende guested on percussion.
The concert
lasted for about an hour and while it was a good show (you cannot beat
free admission) the band seemed lacking in some aspects. They are a
new young band so it will be interesting to see how they will sound
six months from now.
P.S. -
The Mexican group, Las Pistoleras and Xiomara
Lougart (great vocals) and her band were the opening acts.
