One
of the largest Caribbean Dance competitions in the world has graced
the city of Torino (Italy). The 1st of June, 2003 at Palastampa,
the place that has always been the musical temple of this SalsaCity,
2,500 people were able to enjoy a stunning spectacle, right up until
the last musical note! This was the First World Rueda de Casino
Championships and the World Salsa Cup.
Torino
had never seen such a large international dance competition with more
than 100 couples and 12 Rueda dance teams struggling until the last
salsa was played to win the much coveted trophy.
Surely
this can be considered as a general test for next year's competition.
They didn't give us much time to organize the Rueda teams and the couples
from outside of the European continent, but the results obtained in
two months of work lead us to believe that next year will be even better.
The
final results are in and Sergio and Sonia Sampaoli,
already world vice-champions of salsa in 2000, and surely one of the
most representative couples of Caribbean dance styles in Italy, were
the big winners this time around, both as a couple in the Campeonato
del Mondo di Salsa, and also in the group as a part of the
Sampaoli Dance Company.
Right up
there at the top as well was the team of the best Cuban dancers who
live in Italy, the Rueda Cubalibre, taking second place.
They have been here for more than 20 years and have contributed much
to the Latin dance movement in Europe.
