| Prague,
the Golden city and capital of the Czech Republic had their 5th
Annual Salsa Congress from March 31 to April 2, 2006. Five accomplished
salseros from Montreal were in attendance: Faruk Patel (SalsaPower
Local Correspondent for Montreal), Mark I-Kai Lin, Martin Volesky
aka DJ Montuno, Pierre Johnson, and NuevoMambo's Michel Meixner. |
Praga,
la ciudad dorada y la capital de la República Checa celebraron
su quinto congreso anual de la salsa desde el 31 de marzo hasta
el 2 de abril, 2006. Cinco salseros serios desde Montreal estuvieron
allí para presenciarlo: Faruk Patel (Corresponsal Locl de
SalsaPower en Montreal), Mark I-Kai Lin, Martin Volesky aka DJ Montuno,
Pierre Johnson, and NuevoMambo's Michel Meixner. |
The
goal of their 10-day trip was to mix travel holidays and salsa
and that's exactly what they achieved. These 5 salseros not only
managed to participate in the Prague Salsa Congress where they
attended workshops and danced late into the night, but they were
also able to visit the beautiful cities of Prague (Czech Republic)
and Budapest (Hungary).
Prague
held many beautiful sights including the St. Vitus Cathedral and
a day trip to Karlstein's castle. Walking in Prague is like walking
through a living museum where everything is older than Canada
itself. Budapest was also a sight-seeing pleasure with the impressive
Parliament building along the Danube, various castles, and the
eccentric Roman baths.
The
whole group had a fantastic time at the congress where they shared
some laughs with teachers such as Super Mario
and had the opportunity to dance with beautiful dancers from Poland,
Sweden, Germany, Hungary, and of course Prague.
They
were also pleasantly surprised to find good dancers every single
night of the trip when they spent the whole night tearing up the
dance floor at local clubs and showcased their own diverse nationalities
and dancing styles. |
La
meta de su viaje de 10 días fue mezclar unas vacaciones
y la salsa, y lo lograron. Estos 5 salseros no sólo participaron
en el Congreso de Salsa de Praga, donde también asistieron
talleres y bailaron hasta altas horas de la madrugada, sino también
lograron visitar las bellas ciudades de Praga (República
Checa) y Budapest (Hungría).
Praga
es una ciudad bella que incluye la Catedral de San Vitus y un
viaje de día al Castillo de Karlstein. Caminando en Praga
es como caminar en un museo vivo donde todo es más antiguo
que el país de Canada, para empezar. Budapest también
fue una bella experiencia con el edificio del gobierno impresionante,
junto al Río Danube, varios castillos y los eccéntricos
baños romanos.
El
grupo entero se divertieron muchísmo en el congreso donde
compartieron buenos momentos con los profesores como Súper
Mario y tuvieron la oportunidad de bailar con las bellas
bailarines de Polonia, Suecia, Alemania, Hungría y por
supuesto, Praga.
También
se sorprendieron en encontrar buenas bailarines cada noche del
viaje donde pasaron la noche entera quemando la pista de baile
en los clubs locales y se destacaron con su propio estilo de baile. |

the local salsa communities are much smaller than Montreal's, everyone
they met was very friendly, enthusiastic, and just as addicted to
going dancing every night of the week. In Budapest they discovered
that most dancers dance only Cuban-style (Rueda) however they quickly
made a strong impression on the dance floor and found that local
salseras were very welcoming and excited to have an opportunity
to dance with native On-1 dancers. |
Aunque
las comunidades salseras locales son más pequeñas
que la de Montreal, todo mundo que conocieron fueron amables, entusiásticos
y tan adictos al salir a bailar cada noche que ellos. En Budapest

| All
trips have funny stories so here are the top 5:
1. One salsero "lost" his left street shoe after dancing
late on the 2nd night and didn't manage to get it back until 8
days later.
2.
Two tourist-minded salseros would "only" dance until
3 a.m., which was considered a very early night by the other salseros
who finished their nights at 6 a.m. when the music stopped.
3.
All five shared Martin's tiny 2-½ bedroom apartment in
Prague where the resulting snoring made for a fine concerto.
4.
Three salseros were accidentally locked-in the apartment for several
hours by the other two, which almost caused them to miss the train
to Budapest if not for a fast driving long-haired taxi driver
in an old BMW while playing loud heavy death-metal on his radio.
5.
Following several late nights of dancing, two salseros failed
repeatedly, but eventually succeeded, in visiting the famous Prague
castle.
This
trip was certainly a fantastic mix of sight-seeing and meeting
locals who had a common passion for salsa. These travelers would
strongly recommend to anyone to organize a trip to a great European
destination while simultaneously attending a salsa congress such
as the ones held in Spain, Sweden, London, Germany, and of course
Prague! |
Todos
los viajes tienen cuentos chistosos, así que aquí
tienen los mejores cinco:
1.
Un salsero "perdió" su zapato izquierdo después
de bailar hasta tarde la segunda noche y no lo recuperó
sino hasta ocho días después.
2.
Dos salseros turísticos se limitaron a bailar hasta las
3 a.m., lo cual fue considerado muy temprano por los otros salseros
quienes terminaron de bailar al parar la música a las 6
a.m.
3.
Los cinco compartieron el pequeño departamento de Martín
de 2 recámaras en Praga donde el ronquido acompañante
resultó ser un concierto muy fino.
4.
Tres salseros se quedaron trancados adentro del departamento debido
a los otros dos por varias horas, lo que casi les causó
perder el tren a Budapest de no haber sido por un taxista rápido
de pelo largo en un viejo BMW mientras tocaba música metálica
de muerte en su radio.
5.
Después de varias noches de rumba, dos salsero fallaron
repetidas veces en visitar el famoso Castillo de Praga, pero al
final de cuentas, lo lograron.
Este
viaje fue una mezcla fantástica de paseo y conociendo a
gente local quienes compartieron una pasión común
por la salsa. Estos viajeros recomiendan que todos deben organizar
un viaje a un gran destino europeo para atender un congreso de
salsa en lugares como España, Suecia, Londres, Alemania
y por supuesto, Praga! |
