Synopsis:
Alfonsín Quintana is one of the last singers
from the old guard, the lead singer for the group, Jóvenes
del Cayo.

del Cayo.
I am in my office with the elder singer so that he can tell me
a bit about his life and the miracles of his musical career.
-RL:
How did you get into music?
-AQ:
I worked at a furniture store where I knew the pianist and director
of the orchestra, Neno González. He was
a neighbor and a friend and I always let him know how interested
I was in the music. One day, Domingo Vargas,
founder in 1924 of the septet Jóvenes del Cayo
showed up at my door, accompanied by Miguelito Valdés,
who played bass, and Néstor Milí,
author of La caminadora, Yerbero moderno. They had come
at the request of Neno González with the
request that I direct the septet. I began as a representative,
and at parties I helped with the percussion. When the group was
reorganized as a band, they began to put together a repetoire
of songs to sing.
-RL:
Let's talk about the members of the group.
-AQ:
On the piano there were various famous people such as Pérez
Prado, René Urbino, Pepe Delgado, Silvio Contreras, Javier
Vázquez y Adolfo O'Relly. They
were instrumentalists that would make world history. Pérez
Prado was the Rey del Mambo all over
the world, Javier worked for Vicentico
and the Sonora Matancera.

And the trumpet players?
-AQ:
Félix Chappottín was the most well-known.
Alfonso Salinas, José Gundín, "El Fiñe",
Vinicio González, Vitelio Cruz, Mario Chong, Roberto Fernández.
-RL:
Let's go on to the singers.
-AQ:
Miguelito Valdés was the biggest star, but there was also
Daniel Santos, Dandy Beltrán, Domingo Vargas, Celio
González, Alberto Prats y José Franca.
-RL:
There are other musicians we should add.

Helio Orovio played bongó, Gastón
Laserie, Filiberto Sánchez, Guillermo
Romero, Israel Pérez, José Suárez.
-RL:
When did the group disband?
-AQ:
In 1960, after returning from the United States. Some of our members
decided to live outside of Cuba.
-RL:
And you? What did you do?
-AQ:
In 1964 I formed a house group for the Tropicana,
el Parisién, Habana Libre, Varadero. I didn't
want to put the Jóvenes del Cayo back together for sentimental
reasons.
-RL:
Trips overseas?
-AQ:
From 1952 to 1996 I traveled 6 times to the US. In 1956 Colombia
and in 1958 Panamá.
-RL:
And now the group is being rescued.
-AQ:
Helio Orovio has taken on the job of organizing
the band and here we are playing!

cantantes de la vieja guardia de Cuba, la voz del conjunto Jóvenes
del Cayo.
Alfonsín Quintana sigue cantando en el
conjunto Jóvenes del Cayo. Me encuentro
en mi oficina con el viejo cantor para que me cuente de vidas
y milagros de su trayectoria musical.
-RL: ¿Cómo entra en la música?
-AQ: Yo trabajaba en una mueblería donde conocí
al pianista y director de orquesta, Neno González.
Era vecino y amigo, le mostré siempre mi interés
por la música. En mi casa se presenta Domingo Vargas,
fundador en 1924 del septeto Jóvenes del Cayo,
lo acompañaban Miguelito Valdés
–tocaba el bajo- y Néstor Milí –compositor
de La caminadora, Yerbero moderno. Ellos venían
enviados por Neno González con la intención
de que yo dirigiera el septeto. Comencé como un representante,
en las fiestas ayudaba en la percusión y cuando se conforma
el septeto como conjunto, comienza a montar un repertorio para
cantar.
-RL: Hablemos de los integrantes del conjunto.
-AQ: En el piano pasaron figuras como Pérez Prado,
René Urbino, Pepe Delgado, Silvio Contreras, Javier Vázquez
y Adolfo O'Relly. Instrumentistas que harían
historia en el mundo. Pérez Prado fue
el Rey del mambo mundial, Javier
trabajó para Vicentico y La Sonora
Matancera.
-RL: ¿Trompetistas que figuraron?
-AQ: Félix Chappottín fue el más
estelar. Alfonso Salinas, José Gundín
–el Fiñe-, Vinicio González, Vitelio
Cruz, Mario Chong, Roberto Fernández.
-RL: Pasemos a los cantantes.
-AQ: Miguelito Valdés fue la gran estrella,
también desfiló Daniel Santos, Dandy Beltrán,
Domingo Vargas, Celio González, Alberto Prats y José
Franca.
-RL: Hay otros músicos que se pueden adicionar.
-AQ: Helio Orovio tocó el bongó,
Gastón Laserie, Filiberto Sánchez,
Guillermo Romero, Israel Pérez, José Suárez.
-RL: ¿Cuándo se desintegra el conjunto?
-AQ: En 1960, después de regresar de EE.UU., algunos integrantes
decidieron residir fuera.
-RL: Y usted, ¿qué hizo?
-AQ: En 1964 formé un grupo acompañante para Tropicana,
el Parisién, Habana Libre, Varadero. No quise
agrupar de nuevo los Jóvenes del Cayo,
por asuntos sentimentales.
-RL: ¿Viajes al exterior?
-AQ: Desde 1952 a 1996 viajé 6 veces a EE.UU., en 1956
Colombia, 1958 Panamá.
-RL: Ahora vuelve a rescatarse.
-AQ: Helio Orovio se ha dado a la tarea de organizar
el conjunto y ahí lo vemos tocando. |
