Two
pearls of the Cuban musical culture share a quiet moment
in this emblematic picture.
They
are Francisco Ulloa and Francisco Repilado
(Compay Segundo), and they've shared a friendship
that has lasted more than 30 years. They turned the streets
of Santiago
de Cuba into their life's work with their
popular music. Today they are a symbol of the world musical
culture that has drawn from their popular roots.
This artistic
project was the dream of José Antonio Prades Hung, a cultural
promotor (and Local Correspondent for SalsaPower in Santiago, Cuba).
He invited Francisco Ulloa's Piquete
Santiaguero to the UNEAC Project to delight the participants of
the "Dusseldorf en Santiago de Cuba" exposition, which
was inaugurated on October 22, 2002 at the Galería Taller JACAS
Cerámicas.
The
Dusseldorf Exposition in Santiago, Cuba is sponsored
by the Comité Provincial UNEAC in Santiago, Cuba
and by the OLSEN SCENIC Company in Germany. The president, Oliver
Leigers, brought a collection of pictures of theatre buildings in
Dusseldorf and of other typical places in that city. The pictures are
both his and others on loan from the Theatre Museum of Dusseldorf.
UNEAC's
President, Rodulfo Vaillant, spoke about consolidating the work
of cultural exchanges between the two countries and especially between
the cities of Santiago, Cuba and Dusseldorf.
Jorge
Jacas, a local artist and the Director of the Galería Taller
graciously offered his workshop for the exposition and is the acting
curator.
This is
the beginning of a new chapter for UNEAC, and after all of the
protocol was finished, Francisco Ulloa and his Piquete Santiaguero
took over the Gallery's patio, creating a friendly atmousphere and offering
a tour through the repetoire of Cuban music to those present, especially
danzón and son.
The Exposition
was organized within the framework of the XIX Edition of the Festival
Premio Caracol de la UNEAC and during the Jornada por la Cultura
Cubana. It has been very well promoted; two articles in the magazine,
Sierra Maestra, and four different shows on National Cuban Television,
as well as constant spots on local, regional and national radio programs.
Who is
Francisco Salvador Ulloa Anasco? Born in Santiago de Cuba in
1940, he is a prestigious musician, composer, arranger, Teacher of Teachers.
He is the Director of the Orquesta Típica and for many
years, he also directed the Banda Municipal. He speaks Spanish,
Russian, French, English and Esperanto.
From 1962
to 1984 he was the trumpet player in the Orquesta Los Taínos,
soloist in the Orquesta Típica Tradicional and played
in the wind section of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Oriente.
Between
1983 and 1984 he was the Guest Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica
de Oriente and Harmony Professor of the Filial del CNSEA in Santiago
de Cuba. From 1989 until 1999 he was the Director and Trumpet player
for the Orquesta Típica Tradicional. In 1998 he founded
the Piquete Típico Santiaguero, which has visited Italy
and the French Antilles.
Many of
his research projects have been published in the Cultural supplement
of the "Perfil Santiago": "El Danzón
Baile Nacional Cubano", (1992), "El Bombín de
Barreto", (1992), "Rompiendo la rutina", (1993),
and "Bodas de Oro", (1993).
His
group, Piquete Santiaguero, was born within the old walls of
the Museo del Ambiente Histórico, Casa de Diego Velázquez,
considered to be the oldest building in the New World. He goes there
daily to rehearse and on Saturdays he gives shows.
