Since
1957 the Cinco Latinos, with lead singer, Estela Raval, were the
most listened-to vocal group in Cuba and in all of the Latin American
continent.
I
remember that voice from my childhood that sang everything, always
with a unique style: Angelina, Florecita, Como antes, Las
hojas muertas, Concierto de otoño, Mi madre querida, Solo
tú, Eres diferente, Himno al amor, Abran las ventanas,
Pequeña flor, Mi oración, Mi cariñito, Tu
eres mi destino, Don Quijote and many others.
In
1982 Irakere, Son 14, Los Van Van were all in vogue. Suddenly,
the Havana public gets the news that the group Los Cinco Latinos
will be playing on the weekend at the Carlos Marx theater. This
was a happening that nobody wanted to miss. For the first time
we would have the voice of Estela Raval right there with us.
She
was accompanied by her musical director, Carlos Antinori and Ricardo
Romero, creator and general director with whom she shared 28 years
of marriage and three children, two of who were artists.
Estela
had a long silent period, retirement just as she was the most
popular. There was a radio program on the Havana station known
as COCO where they kept the memory of the Cinco Latinos alive,
for more than 20 years. COCO was the station that had programs
that highlighted such stars as Los Cinco Latinos, Vicnetico Valdés,
and José Tejedor. Estela visited the station to thank them
for keeping the memory of Los Cinco Latinos alive.
There
were ten members of Los Cinco Latinos: Estela Raval, Ricardo Carlos,
Ricardo Cabral y Augusto Granata, as well five talented young
musicians who offered us a new sound, without entirely drifting
away from the group's personality.
The
debut of this new phase in her musical career in 1982 had begun
in Buenos Aires. They later went to Spain, Cuba, Puerto Rico,
Santo Domingo, Venezuela, Panamá and Perú.
The
Cinco Latinos had begun in 1957, attracted by the fever of the
American vocal groups, especially the Platters. But the style
of the Argentinians was quite different, and very Latino. "Back
then," Estela Raval said, "at home with my husband,
both of us were dreamers. We wanted to do a lot of things with
music. We decided on a vocal group and amongst our friends we
came up with the other "Latinos". We managed to get
a contract with CBS, although it was quite difficult, and we recorded
our first album with them. The singles that were on that record
were: Sólo tú, and Abran las ventanas. There was
no new contract. I guess they didn't like the experience, saying
that only the woman sang and the guys didn't. But they forgot
the public's opinion. The record began to take off and was popular
all over Argentina. Then CBS decided to give us a contract."
There
are more than one hundred albums recorded by Los Cinco Latinos.
They toured all of America, Europe, the Orient and they even received
accolades in the famous Parisian Olympia Theatre. "Before
we retired we couldn't miss the opportunity of singing in Havana,
the Mecca of music." said Estela Raval. "I have a lot
of love for Cuba."
The
concert in the Carlos Marx Theater lasted two hours. We all sang
along with the classic songs of Los Cinco Latinos and we will
forever be their loyal fans. |

1957 Los Cinco Latinos, con la estrella Estela Raval, se convirtieron
en la agrupación vocal más escuchada en Cuba y en
todo el continente latinoamericano.
Yo
recuerdo desde niño aquella voz que lo cantaba todo, siempre

En 1982 estaban de moda en Cuba Los Irakere, Son 14, Los Van Van.
De repente el público habanero recibe la noticia de que
el grupo Los Cinco Latinos se presentaría un fin de semana
en el teatro Carlos Marx. Un acontecimiento que nadie quería
perderse. Por primera vez tendríamos frente a frente a
la voz de Estela Raval.
La
acompañaba su director musical, Carlos Antinori y Ricardo
Romero, creador y director general con el cual llevaba casada
28 años y mantenían tres hijos, dos de ellos artistas.
Estela había tenido una etapa de silencio, de retiro en
plena cima. En la emisora habanera de la COCO se mantenía
la memoria de Los Cinco Latinos, a través de un espacio
musical que se difundió durante más de 20 años.
La COCO era la emisora que contaba con programas estelares de
figuras como Los Cinco Latinos, Vicentico Valdés, José
Tejedor. Estela visitó la emisora COCO para agradecer la
memoria mantenida de Los Cinco Latinos.
Los integrantes de Los Cinco Latinos eran diez: Estela Raval,
Ricardo Carlos, Ricardo Cabral y Augusto Granata, además
de cinco jóvenes y talentosos músicos que aportaban
una sonoridad nueva, sin apartarse de la personalidad de siempre.
Su debut de esta nueva etapa 82, había comenzado en Buenos
Aires, después siguieron España, Cuba, Puerto Rico,
Santo Domingo, Venezuela, Panamá y Perú.
Los Cinco Latinos habían comenzado en 1957, animado por
la fiebre de los grupos vocales estadounidenses, especialmente
Los Platters. Pero el estilo de los argentinos era muy distinto,
muy latino. "En aquel entonces" –me contó
Estela Raval- "en nuestra casa, mi esposo y yo, jóvenes
muy soñadores, deseábamos hacer muchas cosas en
la música. Se nos ocurrió el grupo vocal y dentro
de los amigos surgieron los otros "latinos". Logramos
con muchas dificultades un contrato con la CBS que nos grabó
el primer disco. Las
canciones que contenía, eran: Sólo tú, Abran
las ventanas. No hubo nuevos contratos, no le interesó
la experiencia, alegaron que solamente la chica cantaba y los
chicos no. Pero olvidaron la opinión pública. El
disco fue cogiendo temperatura y popularidad en toda Argentina.
Entonces la CBS se movilizó y nos contrató enseguida".
La cantidad de discos grabados por Los Cinco Latinos sobrepasa
la suma de cien. Las giras dominaron toda América, Europa,
Oriente y llegaron a ser aclamados hasta en el famoso teatro Olympia
de París. "Antes de retirarnos no podíamos
dejar de cantar en La Habana, la meca de la música."–dijo
Estela Raval-; "Tengo mucho amor por Cuba".
El concierto en el Carlos Marx fue de dos horas, todos cantamos
aquellos clásicos de Los Cinco Latinos y seguimos siendo
sus fieles de siempre.
