Cuban Artists unable to obtain visas to attend the Latin Grammys in Miami

by Benjamin Rapoport

I just searched Google on the subject of Cuban artists not being allowed to enter the U.S. to prevent them from attending the Latin Grammys.

Our country just doesn't get it. If the Nazi's hold an Olympic gathering, the U.S. is sure to go and compete, ignoring an evil regimes propaganda. We were brave then, but now, as the richest, and most powerful country in the world we ban artists from representing their art because of who governs their country. Those who complain that these artist are agents of Castro, cop to an out-dated excuse. Communism is no longer the word used by the fear mongers. Terrorism has replaced it.

Since when does the talent of an artist represent the politics of the country they are raised in? Many talented people come from oppressive countries, so maybe it is the possibility of freedom itself, that is an incentive for these artists to become successful. I would understand it to be their only way of achieving some measure of freedom in their country. Sometimes freedom happens.

In Miami, these exiles, politicians, and the current administration have censured these artist from participating in a celebration of music. How can a small but outspoken and politcally connected group of activists subvert my freedom of wanting to enjoy their art by seeing and hearing these artist in person?

If they feel that my enjoyment of live music of a Cuban artist is wrong, they should be reminded that this country, which most of them have adopted as their own, was founded on the rights of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Simply put. Without Latin music, especially those from Cuba, there would be less happiness in my life.
