Santiago
de Cuba, 12 de Abril del 2007.
The
day began with a burning sun. People walked by perspiring and
took cover under the shade of leafy trees. We quickly organized
ourselves at work to leave the historic downtown of the city and
head out to the neighborhood of La Ceiba.
Various
journalists joined me: Orlando Ocaña (Radio Progreso),
Sergio Martínez (Radio Rebelde), Ariel Tomás Despaigne
(Radio Mambí), José Aquiles Virelles (Premio Nacional
de Música Adolfo Guzmán). All had seen me walking
the streets of Santiago, Cuba in the last two days and they all
wanted to know if it was true or not that there was a 100 year
young man who dances casino.
Today
there is proof.
Two
months ago we began organizing his fellow artists, musicians and
promoters to celebrate the 100th birthday of Julio Zenón
Blanco, better known as Lin.
One
afternoon found us at the house of Master Francisco Ulloa
and the neurosurgeon Fernando Tasse. They suggested we turn Lin's
100th birthday celebration into a cultural event connected with
the "Casinoteca". This jovial, young and happy man still
dances everything from Danzón to Casino.
We
arrived at La Ceiba around eleven in the morning and found Lin
passing out candies to the invitees. He had already begun dancing
and telling stories. As we awaited the Bolerista de Oro
Eddy Milagros and the Casinoteca coordinators, Susana
and Miriam, more and more people kept arriving, family and neighbors.
At
noon, Lin asked for a break and took a shower. He had drunk a
bit of rum and was feeling a bit woozy. After changing into a
grey safari shirt he was ready to take on his social obligations
and share his zest for a quality, healthy life. He delighted us
and at the same time made us reflect on our own social conduct
and our health.
The
young ladies felt his strong lead around their waists as they
danced in the rhythm of the Son.
Lin
began dancing at eleven in the morning and when five o'clock in
the afternoon rolled around, he was still dancing at the Salón
Rosado in La Ceiba.
We
said our farewells, but we left him in the good hands of other
reporters such as those from Tele Turquino (Turkey) who were compiling
the stories of young Lin who was still, at that hour of the day,
chatting, dancing and surrounded by his 16 children (all alive
and the oldest at 86 years of age), his 35 grandchildren and his
32 great-grandchildren.
He
stands as an example of quality life: health, social life and
hope for the future. He gathers more than 80 people, all family
and friends from Las Tunas, Guantánamo and the neighborhoods
of Santiago de Cuba.
He
dreams of going to bed today and getting up tomorrow with more
life in him. He is accompanied in his tremendous quality of life
and full health by his brother of 94 years of age, and his 80
year old sister.
In
the mornings Lin gets up and drinks his malta with milk and his
honey with propoleo and he looks at every woman as a being to
be conquored!
It
is so interesting to be here with a man who is 100 years old -

I
came here from Guantánamo Sur in my 56 Chevy with 8 people,
an anima and a kake. I am a worker in the Vanguardia Nacional
in upholstery, but I could not miss the party for my father in
law and here I am. - Virgilio Plane Pozo (Billyllo).
In
San Fernando Realengo, #18, nobody lives there anymore - there's
nothing, only dirt. Everyone moved to the city.

have an excellent father-in-law, who is very concerned for the
welfare of his children, and his grandchildren. He is turning
100 and I can tell you from my heart: May he live long, as he

El
día amaneció con un tremendo golpe de Sol. Las personas
caminan sudorosas y se cobijan en los pocos árboles frondosos.
Nosotros rápidos en arreglar las cosas de trabajo en el
casco histórico de la ciudad para ir al barrio de La Ceiba.
Varios
periodistas: Orlando Ocaña (Radio Progreso), Sergio Martínez
(Radio Rebelde), Ariel Tomás Despaigne (Radio Mambí),
José Aquiles Virelles (Premio Nacional de Música
Adolfo Guzmán). Todos me han visto por las calles de Santiago
de Cuba los últimos dos días, y me manifiestan si
es o no una exageración lo del joven de 100 años
que baila casino.
Hoy
es un hecho.
Hace
dos meses se convocó a los amigos artistas, músicos,
promotores para celebrar los 100 años de Julio
Zenón Blanco, mas conocido como Lin.
Estábamos
una tarde en la Casa del Jurista y el Maestro Francisco
Ulloa y el Neurocirujano Fernando Tasse propusieron la
idea de hacer del evento un hecho cultural y vincular las acciones
de la Casinoteca con el aniversario 100 del natalicio del hombre
jovial, joven y feliz quien aun baila desde el Danzón al
Casino.
Llegamos
a La Ceiba sobre las once de la mañana y ya Lin repartía
dulce a los invitados y comenzó a bailar y a contar historias.
Esperaba la Bolerista de Oro Eddy Milagros y
las coordinadoras de la Casinoteca Susana y Miriam y se sumaban
mas y más personas, familias, vecinos.
A
las doce del día, Lin pidió un receso y se bañó.
Le habían dado un poco de ron y estaba medio mareado. Cuando
se cambió de ropa ( se puso un Zafari gris oscuro) salió
listo para el combate de la vida social y el contagio de su salud
con calidad. Nos hizo felices y a la vez analizar nuestra conducta
social y de salud.
A
sus pasos marcaditos de Son, las jóvenes chicas en su casa
sentían hoy la fuerza de su pulso en el talle de sus esbeltos
cuerpos.
Bailó
Lin desde las once de la mañana, y aun a las cinco de la
tarde marcaba pasos en su Salón Rosado en La Ceiba.
Nos
despedimos, pero dejamos el espíritu de otros periodistas
quienes desde Tele Turquino y su equipo de reporteros compilaban
historias del joven Lin y quien a esa hora parlaba, bailaba y
rodeado de sus 16 hijos (todos vivos y el mayor con 86 años
de edad), sus 35 nietos y sus 32 biznietos.
Ofrecía
un ejemplo de vida con calidad: salud, vida social (reúne
a familiares y amigos desde las Tunas, Guantánamo y los
barrios de Santiago de Cuba en cifra superior a las 80 personas),
y perspectiva de futuro.
Sueña con dormir hoy y levantarse mañana con mas
vida. Le acompañaban con tremenda calidad de vida y plenitud
de salud su hermano de 94 años de edad y su hermana de
80 años de edad.
Amanece
y Lin se toma su malta con leche y su miel con propoleo, y en
cada chica ve un espíritu de vida a conquistar.
Que interesante estar reunido con un señor
de 100 años de edad - soy amigo
de la familia y tengo 64 años, vivo en Rio Rivera, Veguita

He traído en mi maquina Chevrolet 56 desde
Guantánamo Sur a 8 personas, un animal y un kake, soy trabajador
Vanguardia Nacional en tapicería, pero no me podía
perder la fiesta de mi suegro y aquí estoy. -

San Fernando Realengo 18, no vive nadie, no hay na´, solo
tierra. La gente vino para la ciudad. - Lin.

un suegro excelente, muy preocupado por los hijos, por los nietos,
cumple 100 años y lo digo de corazón: QUE VIVA LA
