Pedrito
Calvo, the former singer of Los Van Van, has returned
to the charanga format with which he started back in 1974. During
his debut many of his former companions from the old school of
Los Van Van were there with him.
Pedrito
Calvo started off with his new charanga, La Justicia
in a presentation at the Casa de la Música Galiano, inviting
his old friends to join him: the pianist César
"Pupy" Pedroso, with whom he sang the popular
song, Sandunguera back in 1984.
The
current bass player of Los Van Van, Cucurucho,
together with Angelito Bonné sang chorus
as well as some of the verses. Ricardo Leyva,
Director of Sur Caribe didn't miss the show either,
along with singer Arnaldo "Talismán"
Rodríguez.
Pedrito's
new charanga has no less than 16 members: 3 violins, three trombones,
three singers, bass, piano, tumbadora, paila, güiro, keyboards
and a lead singer. The critics say it sounds a bit like Juan
Formell, a bit like Pupy. From that
mix comes Pedrito after nearly three decades
of work.
"La
Justicia," explains Pedrito, "is something
I've been studying for a long time. I approached the arranger
Arnaldo Jiménez to see if he was interested
in working with me to save this Van Van style of music. Arnaldo
told me, 'I'm the man who can help you put together this project.'
And that is how we started a month ago, preparing the hits I've
had over the years and we will also be including some new numbers.
We finally got started and it has been well received, according
to those who have shared their feelings with me."
"The
style of charanga we have put together," explained arranger
Arnaldo Jiménez, "has Van
Van style trombones. I am working on Pedrito's
hits, but also on a new and attractive repetoire: La mulata
del barrio, La cuenta no da, Música para la muchacha
and some new ones about interesting characters found in daily
life."
Pedrito
had
a birthday on April 17th and spent that special day giving a special
concert at the Casa de la Música in Miramar. I remember
Pedrito's first times with Los Van Van.
He was known for the time spent with his father's group. His father
is also named Pedrito Calvo.

was a typical Cuban guy, happy, with such a gravelly voice that
some began calling him "El Ronco" (the hoarse one). |

En su estreno asistieron muchos de sus compañeros de la
vieja guardia en Los Van Van.

amigos: el pianista César Pedroso (Pupy)
con el que cantó la conocida Sandunguera de 1984.
También
estuvieron en el estreno, el bajista actual de Los Van
Van, Cucurucho y Angelito Bonné
que hizo coro en uno de los estribillos. Ricardo Leyva,
director de Sur Caribe no faltó a la cita,
al igual que el cantante Arnaldo Rodríguez
(Talismán).
La nueva charanga de Pedrito cuenta nada menos
que con 16 integrantes: tres violines, tres trombones, tres cantantes,
bajo, piano, tumbadora, paila, güiro, teclado y un cantante
principal. Los críticos dicen que la charanga suena un
poco a Juan Formell, un poco a Pupy.
De esa fusión sale Pedrito en casi tres
décadas de trabajo.
"La Justicia" –explica Pedrito-
"es una inquietud que venía estudiando hace un tiempo.
Me acerqué al orquestador Arnaldo Jiménez
para que se integrara conmigo en este rescate del estilo vanvanero.
Arnaldo me contestó -Yo soy el hombre que te puede organizar
ese nuevo proyecto. Y así empezamos hace un mes preparando
los hit que he tenido en estas décadas de trabajo y también
vamos a incluir temas nuevos. Finalmente comenzamos y tuvo una
buena aceptación, según opiniones que me han revelado".
"La
charanga que organizamos" –explica el orquestador Arnaldo
Jiménez- "cuenta con trombones al estilo
de Los Van Van. Estoy trabajando en los éxitos
de Pedrito, pero también en un nuevo repertorio
atractivo: La mulata del barrio, La cuenta no da, Música
para la muchacha y algunos estrenos con personajes interesantes
de la vida cotidiana".
Pedrito también cumplió años
el 17 de abril y recibió tan querida fecha con un concierto
especial en la Casa de la Música de Miramar. Recuerdo los
primeros pasos de Pedrito en Los Van
Van, era conocido a través de la orquesta de su
padre Pedrito Calvo.

The
singer of La Justicia was born in Guanabacoa
to a very musical family and spent his childhood amongst solares
and tambores and babalaos and rumberos.
"Back
then I sold newspapers, worked as a shoe repairman, sold mangos,
passed out serpentinas at carnavals and played a lot of soccer.
Nobody in the world can pull the wool over my eyes."
His
father wanted Pedrito to study violin, but all
he wanted to do was sing and sing.
At
one point a pastor of a Baptist school asked him if he would dare
sing, and it all started there. "They taught me to sing and
with that preparation I went to compete in a competition called
La Corte Suprema with a song titled, "Eres
perversa", an old bolero sung by Panchito Riset.
Isolina Carrillo was on the jury and didn't like
it a bit. She told me to change the song, to get rid of that horrible
whore-house bolero."
"I
sang "La Barca," by Roberto Cantoral
which was made popullar by Lucho Gatica."
But
he couldn't make a living with his music so Pedrito
went back to his old profession of shoe-maker. "Shoe-maker
for your shoes." Then, one day his father needed a singer
for his band and someone told him that his son, Pedrito,
could sing. "So he told me, 'I need you to sing with the
band'. That was my professional baptism, until the militia groups
started and we had the invasion at Playa Girón and there
I was with my gun on my shoulder."
Between
shotguns, rifles and cannons, Pedrito spent the
better part of the decade of the 1960's. Then he returned to his
father's group and also sang with Los Jóvenes del
Filin, Pancho el Bravo, La Ritmo
Oriental until 1972 when Lele left Los
Van Van and that was the shining moment for Pedrito.
"With
La Ritmo," recalls Pedrito, "I
sang hits like Mi socio Manolo, Se baila así,
Aquí el que manda es Mulé. One day, Pupy
and the tumbadora player El Yulo (now deceased)
asked me if I wanted to sing with Los Van Van.
Formell was undecided, but I was confident in
myself." |
El
cantante de La Justicia nació en Guanabacoa,
en una familia muy musical, entre solares y tambores de babalaos
y rumberos, se desarrolló su juventud.
"En
esa etapa vendía periódicos, trabajaba de zapatero,
vendedor de mangos, en carnavales repartía serpentinas
y jugaba mucha pelota, no hay quien me haga un cuento en este
mundo".
El padre quería que Pedrito estudiara
violín, pero al niño solo le interesaba cantar y
cantar.
En
una ocasión un pastor de escuela Bautista le preguntó
si se atrevía a cantar y por ahí fue empezando todo.
"Ellos me enseñaron a cantar y con esa preparación
me presenté en el concurso de La Corte Suprema
con la canción Eres perversa, un bolero
de victrola que cantaba Panchito Riset. Isolina
Carrillo estaba en el jurado y se prejuició con
ese bolero. Me aconsejó que cambiara de canción
y dejara aquel espumoso bolero prostibulario."
"Canté
La Barca, de Roberto Cantoral que popularizó
Lucho Gatica".
Pero la música no daba para comer y Pedrito
volvió a su oficio de zapatero. "Zapatero a sus zapatos".
De repente su padre necesitaba un cantante para la orquesta y
alguien le dice que su hijo Pedrito cantaba.
"Entonces me dijo –hace falta que vayas a cantar en
la orquesta. Ese fue mi bautismo profesional, hasta que llegó
la etapa de las Milicias y la invasión de Playa Girón
y yo con mi fusil en el hombro".
Entre escopetas, fusiles y cañones estuvo Pedrito
buena parte de la década de 1960 en que vuelve de nuevo
con la orquesta de su padre y también llega a cantar con
Los Jóvenes del Filin, Pancho
el Bravo, La Ritmo Oriental hasta que
en 1972 el cantante Lele abandona Los
Van Van y ahí comienza el gran momento de Pedrito.
"En
La Ritmo" –recuerda Pedrito-
"canté éxitos como Mi socio Manolo,
Se baila así, Aquí el que manda es Mulé.

(fallecido ya) me preguntan si quería cantar con Los
Van Van. Formell estaba indeciso, pero yo confiaba en
lo mío". |
"Pedrito
was a work in progress for us for a long time with Los
Van Van." said Juan Formell. "I
kept fine-tuning his style and in a while he became one of the
singers that people identified with the orchestra for a very long
time. He gave Los Van Van that air of native
humor and sensuality, which was a guaranteed thing for the band."
"I
came to Los Van Van," recalls Pedrito,
"with a huge lack of discipline and the other musicians told
me to straighten up since I was nearly 30 years old and it was
time to play the game. I took the straight and narrow path because
Formell is a great guy and a good friend, but when it comes to
work he doesn't believe in friends. You must work with a lot of
respect and discipline. I stayed with Los Van Van until
November of 2000, following a tour of Argentina and Uruguay. I
had the opportunity to share the stage with true musical stars.
I left them with a good average, having just managed a hit with
El negro está cocinando".
After
leaving Los Van Van, Pedrito
began to do shows with NG La Banda, with the
Afro Cuban All Stars and Juan de Marcos
González, until he decided to put together his
new band, La Justicia. This has been the career
path of Pedrito Calvo who has now come full circle
to the same impetus from those times back in the 1970's when he
started out with Los Van Van. Pedrito
says the music never dies. |
"Pedrito
fue un trabajo que proyectamos con mucho tiempo en Los
Van Van" –especifica Juan Formell-
"Fui perfilando su estilo, y se convirtió con el tiempo
en uno de los cantantes que identificó a la orquesta por
mucho tiempo. Le aportó a Los Van Van
ese toque de picardía criolla, una buena garantía
de la orquesta".
"Llegué a Los Van Van" –recuerda
Pedrito- "con mucha indisciplina y los músicos
me aconsejaron que me pusiera para las cosas que ya andaba por
los 30 años y tenía que enderezarme. Yo entré
por el caminito, porque Formell es chévere
y buen amigo, pero en asuntos de trabajo no cree en amigos; hay
que trabajar con respeto y disciplina. Junto a Los Van
Van me mantuve fiel hasta el 20 de noviembre del 2000,
después de una gira por Argentina y Uruguay. Tuve la oportunidad
de compartir con verdaderas estrellas de la música. Me
separé de ellos con un buen average, tenía colocado
un hit con El negro está cocinando".
Después de la salida de Los Van Van, Pedrito
comenzó a hacer algunas presentaciones con NG La
Banda, con el Afro Cuban All Stars de
Juan de Marcos González, hasta que decide
conformar la orquesta La Justicia. Esta es la
trayectoria de Pedrito Calvo que vuelve con el
mismo ímpetu que en aquellos tiempos de la década
de 1970 cuando empezaba en Los Van Van. Pedrito
dice que la música nunca muere. |
