In the afternoon, around four o'clock, when the cobblestones on the Calle Heredia are heated by the music and the comings and goings of the artists and the people, when the artesans begin to fold up their tarps and the bohemians begin to wander amongst the numerous foreign visitors, that is when the Maestro, Alcides Castillo motions to me from the corner of San Felix and Heredia. We glance over to the balcony of the Casa de la Trova and Carlos Tomás, Santiago and the sound technician Teudy and the musicians invite us up.
The doorman says we need to be on the list of invitees, and we tell him, "If Castillo and Prades aren't on the list, then add them because we are going up, my friend!" Later, the writer Marino Wilson tells me that journalists no longer chase stories and we all lament the fact that they are not present to witness such a significant Cuban cultural event.
What a surprise! In the Salón de los Grandes in the Casa de la Trova in Santiago they are launching the CD "Pura Tradición", nominated for an award at the song festival contest, "Cuba Disco 2009".
Los Jubilados and Pedro Gómez invite musicians and friends alike to their party. At the table there are renowned people from the cultural circuits in Santiago and nationally in Cuba, such as Raciel Ruíz, the General Director of EGREM, the "Empresa de Grabaciones y Ediciones Musicales", Dania Mesa, Provincial Cultural Director, Cándido Ávila, Director of the Son de Cuba Agency and the maestro, Enrique Bonné along with the musicians of the groups belonging to the recording label Agencia SonDeCuba.
After a productive chat and a trip down memory lane about many musical productions from the Siboney Studios of EGREM in Santiago, Los Jubilados and Pedro Gómez give us a concert that included (among others): Carlos Tomás- Golden Trumpet, Ulises – Bongo and cowbell, Fidel Pérez - Tres, Jesús Estrada - Tumbadoras, María Carcasés- Backup Vocals, Osmany González - Guitar, Bebeto – Founder and lead vocals and Pedro Gómez- Golden Bolero singer.
In addition, the following people were present: Alcides Castillo, Director of the Municipal Band, Enrique Bonné, Director of the Tambores of Enrique Bonné and creator of the Pilón rhythm, José Julián Padilla Sánchez - musicologist and grandson of Pepe Sánchez, José Armando Garzón, Singer/songwriter, Inaudis Paisán - Golden Trumpet and Director of the chorus called Estudiantina Invasora and Rubén Neira, Director of the Casa de la Trova. The cameramen from Tele Turquino had a hard time deciding where to focus with so many dignitaries present.
We report for www.SalsaPower.com and we shoot video and digital pictures for Son Caribe TV in Seville, Spain, where our collegue Antonio Bravo inspires us to protect for posterity these unique cultural happenings that are part of our daily lives on the streets of Santiago, Cuba and in the Casa de la Trova.

We move for a while to the gallery called, "La Escalera" (the "staircase") where the Dúo JJ Son at the Peña de los Poetas was welcoming the family of Marcelino Mombiela after having traveled from Manchester, England. They are celebrating the 69th birthday of the cultural icon, Roger Durañona.
A bit later we return to the Casa (de la Trova) and we see through the colonial window that the fraternal Dúo Cohíba has just finished their set. Their Director, Jorge Larduet, without missing a beat, winks at us and invites us in. We re-enter the institution from which so many of the musicians of the Buena Vista Social Club got their start and we take a seat. As we listen, the music invokes the spirit of those who are no longer with us, of those who revived their hits with the launch of their new album. We join them in their hopes and dreams and wish that time would not be so ephemeral so as to prolong the creative muse for the people of Santiago and its visitors.

Es de tarde, sobre las cuatro, cuando la Calle Heredia calienta los adoquines con la música y el ir y venir de artistas y de pueblo. Cuando los artesanos comienzan a retirar sus toldos, y los bohemios a deambular al paso de los numerosos visitantes extranjeros, es cuando me saluda el Maestro Alcides Castillo y en la esquina de San Félix y Heredia. Miramos al balcón de la Casa de la Trova y Carlos Tomás y Santiago y el técnico de audio Teudy y músicos nos convidan a subir.
El portero exige presentación en la lista de Invitados, y le decimos: ….si no están Castillo y Prades los pones y estamos subiendo amigo…. Después me comentaba el escritor Marino Wilson, que ahora el Periodista no corre tras la Noticia y lamentamos muchos no estén presentes en ese instante tan significativo para la cultura Cubana.
Que sorpresa! En el Salón de los Grandes de la Casa de la Trova Santiaguera se realiza el Lanzamiento del Volumen de CD "Pura Tradición", Nominado al Festival Concurso de la Canción "Cuba Disco 2009".
Los Jubilados y Pedro Gómez invitan a músicos y amigos a su fiesta y presiden la mesa grandes personalidades de la cultura santiaguera y cubana con Raciel Ruíz, Director General de la EGREM - Empresa de Grabaciones y Ediciones Musicales, Dania Mesa, Directora Provincial de Cultura, Cándido Ávila, Director de la Agencia Son de Cuba y el maestro Enrique Bonné y los Músicos de las agrupaciones pertenecientes al Catálogo de la Agencia SonDeCuba.
Después de una productiva charla y rememorando muchos años de producciones musicales de los Estudios Siboney de la EGREM en Santiago de Cuba, Los Jubilados y Pedro Gómez nos regalan un concierto con la participación, entre otros, de Carlos Tomás- Trompeta de Oro, Ulises – Bongó y Campana, Fidel Pérez - Guitarra Tres, Jesús Estrada - Tumbadoras, María Carcasés- Voz Segunda, Osmany González - Guitarra, Bebeto – Fundador y Cantante y Pedro Gómez- Bolerista de Oro.

Nos movemos un rato a La Galería "La Escalera" donde el Dúo JJ Son en la Peña de los Poetas daba la bienvenida a la familia de Marcelino Mombiela venida desde Manchester, Reino Unido y donde se celebra el cumpleaños 69 del talento cultural Roger Durañona.
Ya regresando a casa a las ocho de la noche, miramos por la ventana colonial de la Casa de la Trova y el fraterno Dúo Cohíba termina su presentación. Su Director, Jorge Larduet, sin soltar las marcas, nos guiña e invita. Entramos nuevamente a la Institución desde donde salieron muchos de los músicos del Buena Vista Social Club y nos sentamos. Escuchamos su música y evocamos el espíritu musical y los éxitos de los que hoy no están, de los que revivieron sus éxitos en un Lanzamiento de su nuevo disco y se proyectan y deseamos el tiempo no sea tan efímero y prolongue la musa creadora del Santiaguero y sus visitantes por siempre. |
