This
picturesque fellow who meanders through the streets of Santiago
de Cuba on a daily basis with his guitar on his shoulder and his
period clothing was lucky enough to have been chosen to sing the
42 songs we hear in the movie, "El Benny."
There
are a lot of people who call him the last bohemian. He is the
center of attention of tourists visiting the city because of his
marvelous voice and his attractive garments. The tourists who
visit the Heroic City of the Republic of Cuba can't help snapping
pictures and videos and enjoy his beautiful voice.
He
was an only son whose love of music was inspired by his grandfather
who played drums and his grandmother who was the queen of French
songs in the Eastern provincial mountains.
He
also recalls that his father was a popular singer. Ever since
he was 8 years old, he accompanied his father singing in the cantinas.
He
met Los Compadres, Ñico Saquito,
Compay Segundo and Elíades Ochoa
back in the 70s. They inspired him to keep on singing.
He
assures his public that he has always been a bohemian and together
with Luis and Guillermo Mesa,
El Colora'o, Puchú and
other bohemians, he felt fulfilled tuning up his voice and giving
the lovers of popular Cuban music what they wanted, mostly in
the streets and the plazas of the city.
At
one time he sang on a program called Trinchera Agraria
on the Santiago station CMKC. A few years ago he traveled to Spain
with the Quinteto Lahera, but he missed his bohemian
lifestyle and he turned down offers to work in the Motherland,
and returned to his city.
He
recorded an album with Los Taínos called
Para que se forme el molote.
He
claims to have recorded a CD in the year 2000 with a company in
England called Line 1. The CD has 7 tracks on it.
With
Cándido Fabré he recorded in 2002
a number called, "La chica quiere chachachá."
The album is called Échale Picante al ron.
He
also recalls back in 1980 that he was considered as a soloist
for the orchestra of Mario Patterson and who
auditioned him was none less than Puntillita.
"Now
I can continue to be a bohemian until God calls me because I don't
have to worry about earning money or signing a contract. I am
glad they respect me, that the people enjoy my music, that I can
exhault my country's name."
On
any given corner in Santiago, Cuba you can find this "Benny",
as people call him. This last bohemian has a huge voice and when
he sings a song by Benny Moré, he reminds
us of that man who also started out as a bohemian and ended up
being known as the "Bárbara del Ribmo".
In
Céspedes Park, on the corner of the Hotel Casa Granda,
in the Plaza de Marte, near El Bodegón, you can always
find this picturesque fellow with his wide brimmed hat, his two-toned
shoes, his ever-present guitar and his fashionable clothing, together
with a shining star that parallels his voice when when he sings
any morning or afternoon in Santiago.
His
popularity has grown since he gave voice to the Bárbaro
del Ritmo in the recently produce big screen production of "El
Benny", directed by Jorge Luis Sánchez,
with Renny Arozarena playing the part of Benny Moré, Limara
Meneses, Isabel Sántos, Carlos Ever Fonseca and
Enrique Molina about the life of the legendary
Cuban singer.
Juan
Manuel Villi was blessed with a powerful and hauntingly
similar voice to that of the unforgettable Bárbaro
del Ritmo.
The
director of the musical portion of the movie, Juan Manuel
Ceruto, assured us that the production could not have
been possible without the participation of Juan Manuel
Villi, responsible for giving life to all the songs that
the Bárbaro del Ritmo "sings"
in the film, no less than 42 songs!
This
is the voice whose timbre was so shockingly close to that innate
artist. After Villi, Ceruto
and his group of jazz musicians finished re-recording all of the
required music, they then added music with Los Orishas,
Chucho Valdés, (who masterfully interpreted a
piano piece), and Juan Formell, who took on the
job of composing a new song, a tribute to the great artist. That
song can be heard at the end of the film.
One
might logically inquire why they didn't just use the original
songs with Benny's actual voice. Jorge Luis Sánchez,
the film's director, stated that it was impossible to use them
with mono sound as well as being impossible to get the rights
to use all of the necessary songs. Ceruto added
that it was also due to a collective decision of not wanting to
defraud the public. "The film shows an actor playing Benny.
We never sought the exact biography, never an exact copy, so therefore
we didn't want to use the original voice nor the original recordings.
We decided to do it all from scratch. The biggest challenge was
to find someone who sang in a similar manner and to be able to
reproduce all of those classic songs in a similar manner to the
old style, while still sounding contemporary."
So
that is how it is with this Santiago version of Benny, as they
say in the eastern provinces. He continues with his bohemian lifestyle,
delighting the hundreds of persons who see him daily and listen
to him sing in this say. We will also continue to remember the
unforgettable Benny Moré, our Sonero
Mayor, legitimate pride of all of the lovers of Cuban
Music.

Este
pintoresco personaje que recorre diariamente las calles santiagueras
con su guitarra al hombro y su folklórica vestimenta tuvo
la suerte de ser escogido para cantar las 42 canciones que escuchamos
en la película "El Benny."
Ya son muchos los que le dicen el último bohemio y por
su maravillosa voz y su atractiva indumentaria, es centro de atención
de los turistas que visitan la Ciudad Héroe de la República
de Cuba, quienes no cesan de tomarle fotografías y vídeos
y disfrutar de su hermosísima voz.
Único hijo, desarrolló su amor por la música
inspirado en su abuelo que tocaba batería y su abuela que
era reina cantadora de música francesa en los montes de
las provincias orientales.
Pero recuerda que también su padre era cantante popular.
Desde la edad de 8 años comenzó a cantar con su
padre en bares y cantinas...
Conoció a Los Compadres, a Ñico
Saquito, Compay Segundo y a Elíades
Ochoa por los años 70. Ellos le inspiraron continuar
cantando.
Asegura que toda su vida ha sido un bohemio y junto a Luis
y Guillermo Mesa, El Colorao, Puchú
y otros bohemios, se entusiasmaba por afinar su voz y darles gusto
a los amantes de la música popular cubana fundamentalmente
en calles y plazas de la ciudad.
Durante algún tiempo cantó en un programa llamado
Trinchera Agraria de la emisora santiaguera CMKC.
Hace pocos años viajó a España con el Quinteto
Lahera, pero añoraba su vida bohemia y no aceptó
ofertas de realizar contratos en La Madre Patria, por lo cual
regresó a su ciudad.
Grabó un disco con Los Taínos titulado
Para que se forme el molote.
Expresa que grabó un CD en el año 2000 con una compañía
de Inglaterra Línea 1. El CD tiene 7 números musicales.
Con Cándido Fabré grabó
en el 2002 un número titulado La chica quiere chachachá.
El disco se llama Échale Picante al ron.
Y recuerda que en 1980 lo evaluaron como cantante solista en la
orquesta de Mario Patterson y que quien lo evaluó
fue nada menos que Puntillita.
"Ahora sigo de bohemio hasta que Dios quiera, porque nunca
estoy apurado para ganar un peso o hacer un contrato, sino que
me gusta que se me respete, y la gente disfrute de mi música,
siempre poniendo el nombre de mi país en alto".
En cualquier esquina de Santiago de Cuba, se puede encontrar con
este "Benny" como le dice la gente, porque este último
bohemio tiene un torrente de voz y una melodía que cuando
canta las canciones de Benny Moré, recordamos
siempre a quien fue también en sus inicios un bohemio y
luego llegó a ser El Bárbaro del Ritmo.
En el Parque Céspedes, la esquina del Hotel Casa Granda,
en la Plaza de Marte, por El Bodegón, siempre está
este pintoresco personaje con su sombrero alón, sus zapatos
de dos tonos, su inseparable guitarra y una indumentaria bastante
pintoresca y además una brillante estrella que brilla tanto
como su voz cuando surca el aire de cualquier mañana o
tarde santiaguera.
Pero la popularidad de este singular personaje ha ido en aumento
luego de que le diera vida a la voz del Bárbaro
del Ritmo en la película recién puesta
en pantalla "El Benny",
dirigida por Jorge Luis Sánchez, con Renny
Arozarena como Benny Moré, Limara
Meneses, Isabel Sántos, Carlos Ever Fonseca y
Enrique Molina que trata sobre la vida del legendario
intérprete cubano.
Juan Manuel Villi tiene una tesitura vocal asombrosamente
similar a la del inolvidable Bárbaro del Ritmo.
El responsable de la banda sonora musical, Juan Manuel
Ceruto, aseguró que la realización no hubiera
sido posible sin la participación del juglar santiaguero
Juan Manuel Villi, encargado de ponerle voz a
todas las canciones que «canta» el Bárbaro
del Ritmo en la cinta. Nada menos que 42 canciones.
Esa es la voz cuyo timbre asombrosamente parecido al genial e
innato artista despeja toda reserva y consigue acercar al auditorio.
Después que Villi, Ceruto,
y su grupo de jóvenes músicos de jazz, regrabaron
toda la música requerida, se añadieron al proyecto
los Orishas, Chucho Valdés,
quien interpretó magistralmente una pieza al piano, y Juan
Formell, encargado de componer un tema inédito,
de tributo al gran artista, que se escucha al final de la película.
A
la lógica pregunta de por qué no se emplearon las
viejas grabaciones con la voz del Benny. Jorge Luis Sánchez,
el director del filme, contestó que era imposible utilizarlas
por el sonido mono y por la imposibilidad de conseguir los derechos
de todas las canciones necesarias. Además, aseguró
Ceruto, con toda la razón, por una decisión
colectiva se prefirió no engañar al público:
"La película presenta a un actor haciendo de El Benny,
nunca se buscó la biografía exacta ni la copia fiel,
así que tampoco quisimos usar la voz y las grabaciones
originales, sino hacerlo todo de nuevo. El mayor reto fue encontrar
a alguien que cantara muy parecido, y, además, reproducir
todas esas canciones clásicas con un sonido bien similar
al antiguo, pero que fuera también contemporáneo".
Así las cosas, este Benny santiaguero, como le dicen en
las provincias orientales, continúa su vida bohemia deleitando
a cientos de personas que lo ven diariamente y lo escuchan para
de esa forma. También continuemos recordando al inolvidable
Benny Moré, nuestro Sonero Mayor,
legítimo orgullo de todos los amantes de la música
