Fruko y sus Tesos in Concert in Utah!

Interviewed and Reviewed by Luis Castro, A.K.A.,

Recently we had the opportunity to jam with Fruko y sus Tesos - what an experience! As I have mentioned in the past, the salsa scene in Utah is growing and to have a legend like Fruko in our state was an unforgettable experience.

The hype has been building surrounding this concert for a while, and they came through. Thanks to C.M. Productions we felt the power of salsa.

On April 12th and 13th, 2002, at The Tropicana Club in Salt Lake City everyone gathered with their salsa shoes ready!!

Azuquita: What do you think about the role of salsa in the expansion of Latino culture in America?

Fruko: I think music is very important. It influences the roots of our souls, The Youth right now is what is keeping this art form alive and I commend you for you passion and love for the music.

Azuquita: How did you come up with your name?

Fruko: Well, back in Colombia where I live, there's a tomato factory and the logo had a doll that had the same shape as my face and had teeth split like mine, you know (he shows me). The name of that doll was Fruko and from then on I became known as Fruko. Tesos mean strength, courage and passion, so that’s where you get Fruko y sus Tesos.

Azuquita: How far would you like to see the salsa scene go?

Fruko: As far is it can go, people need to learn all the different genres that exist in Latin music and the legacy of all the old ones like Mambo, cha-cha, rumba, el son, etc.

We spoke about a lot of things, but there's one thing I can tell you, They are all great people... very humble and very focused on what they do: Rumbear!!!

Some of the songs we heard during the concert were: Cachondea, Calirumba, and of course El Preso. You could see all of them changing from instrument to instrument which was amazing. You even got to hear Cumbia colombiana! Wow!

If you like heavy salsa, get Fruko's CD, you won't regret it!
